NUCU History

Our credit union came into existence when a group of Chemstrand Corporation/Greenwood location employees took inspiration from the Pensacola Plant location and formed a cooperative credit union. The charter was signed on May 4, 1961.
The credit union separated from the company in July, 1979 and began serving other employee groups in 1982.
The credit union continued to grow and opened an additional office in November, 1993.
After several name changes, we became Carolina Employees Credit Union in 1999.
Our field of membership changed to a community charter in 2006. This afforded us the ability to serve everyone who lives, works or attends school in Greenwood County, South Carolina.
Effective February 1, 2010, our name was changed to Neighbors United Credit Union to simply explain who we are and who we serve. Our tagline was also changed to “Member Owned, Neighbor Friendly”.
Our charter changed from State to Federal in August 2013. As a result of this charter change, our name became Neighbors United Federal Credit Union.
As of January 7, 2022 NUCU has expanded our field of membership to include the following counties in South Carolina: Greenwood, Laurens, Edgefield, Abbeville, Newberry, Saluda, and McCormick.
We currently have over 7,000 members with more than $63 million in assets. We have two locations and business can be transacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with technologies such as CU Voice, Online Banking, Mobile Banking, Bill Pay and our Visa® Debit Card Program.

As a community development financial institution, Neighbors United FCU’s primary mission is to improve the financial well-being of low-income residents and targeted underserved areas within the counties of Greenwood, Laurens, Edgefield, Abbeville, McCormick, Newberry, and Saluda by investing in inclusive, flexible and responsibly priced financial products and services, compassionate financial counseling and education, language translation support, and taking a holistic approach to community enhancement.
