Merry Christmas and BEWARE

With the holiday season quickly approaching, fraudsters are at the edge of their seats ready to steal your information. There are many avenues where you can become a victim, so here are a few tips on how to stay safe this Holiday season.

  1. Sign up for Card Valet if you have a NUFCU checking and VISA debit card. With Card Valet, you can set up text alerts for high dollar transactions, certain type of merchants or all transactions. The choice is yours.
  2. Think before you click! This doesn’t just pertain to emails, be wary of online ads, Apps, eGreeting cards and everything else online.   Cybercriminals mimic legitimate sites and contents making it difficult to detect, so look for slight alterations in the web address or URL.
  3. Don’t trust a site or name you do not know AND never fall for the too good to be true price.
  4. Have unique, complex passwords for sites that store your address or payment information and change your password frequently. Consider passphrases instead of passwords. (Example: HaveaM3rryChr!stm@s).
  5. Be cautious of charities that have online giving, in-person and over the phone. Inquire about the charity name and then go to their site online and give. Don’t donate to collection boxes or via phone calls received. This way you know your donation is going to your cause.
  6. Ensure home computers, laptops, tablets and phones are protected with passwords, antivirus, anti-spyware and a firewall.
  7. Look for skimmers at ATMs, gas pumps and self-serve checkouts. If you see tape residue or anything unusual, do not use and contact the owner.

The Staff at Neighbors United Federal Credit Union wish you and your family a Happy and Safe Holiday Season. Keep alert and have a Merry Christmas.
